We loved the idea of giving Quinn a unique play kitchen for Christmas, so we bought the DUKTIG kitchen from Ikea and put our own spin on it with fresh paint, gold hardware, a white subway style backsplash, and a few other kitchen essentials- because no kitchen is complete without a coffee mug ๐
The kitchen comes out of the package as mostly raw wood and plastic. We painted the lower cabinets Chelsea Gray and the upper cabinets Ultra Pure White. The countertop got a light coat of polyurethane to give off the appearance of being a butcher block. To spruce up the sink, faucet, and foot pegs, which come as gray plastic, we repainted each with a spritz of gold spray paint.
We replaced the original plastic hardware with 5.5″ pulls from Home Depot and painted them gold to match the faucet and the sink. We splurged a bit on the stove “knobs”, which are hardware from Anthropologie. I think it is magnificent that they are each a little different! The backsplash is simply poster board with subway tiles drawn on with a Sharpie marker and then cut to size to fit the back of the kitchen.
I feel it’s worth mentioning that the gold spray paint wasn’t the easiest to work with. Even though it covered well, paint globs would randomly drip from the spray valve as I sprayed, so there are a few noticeably uneven spots here and there. Also, this spray paint is more of a matte metallic than a shiny metallic. Depending on what kind of finish you are hoping for, that could be a good thing or a bad thing.
A few days before Christmas, Ryne and I had a breakfast date and were able to get a little last minute Christmas shopping done while we were waiting for our table to be ready. We went to Target and picked up a few kitchen necessities like a dish towel, coffee mug, salt & pepper shakers, and an artificial plant. I absolutely love how the whole thing turned out! Quinn’s face and squeals of joy on Christmas morning are forever ingrained in my mind ๐

Hi! This looks amazing! I am DIY-ing one for my son's birthday at the moment and want to paint the faucet and sink in chrome metallic spray paint. I was wondering how well spray paint covered the plastic components (how has it held up to being played with?) and does the faucet still work once painted, i.e. does it turn? I was looking at it wondering if the paint sticks it up.

Hi there! the paint has held up fantastically! No chipping or pealing after several years of play time and the knobs still turn ๐
