I am so excited to share a look at our main floor with you. One year ago, we had just begun to demo this house. After so many decisions, blood, sweat, and tears (mostly sweat and tears), it is surreal that our family lives here! The house was clean for a hot second before Christmas, so I snapped these shots with only about 30 minutes of daylight left. I tried to find the closest “before” picture I had for each space to show side-by-side all the changes we made. While there is some touch-up work to be done (peep the blue painter’s tape in a few shots), I am so eager to show you some of what we’ve worked so hard on for the last year. Without further ado, enjoy this mini tour of our main floor.
In the kitchen, we added two extra windows, moved the stovetop out of the island to make it feel more like a table, shifted the fridge to the butler’s pantry, and expanded the island by removing the entry coat closet. If you look closely, you can see that the ceiling in the dining nook was vaulted when we bought the house. We removed this feature to create a larger window in an upstairs bedroom. The new envelope sconces on the side walls flanking the sink wall are one of my favorite details. Ryne and I are not big fans of free-floating upper cabinets, so we chose not to add them back in during the renovation. However, we still have plenty of storage thanks in part to the gorgeous glass hutches on the opposite wall.
The entry lost some some walls when we removed the coat closet and gained some walls when we reduced the openings to the rooms flanking the entry, but the biggest change by far is that we added square footage upstairs by turning the two-story entry into an upstairs laundry room. Best. Decision. Ever.
The main floor laundry room used to be a main floor bedroom, but the previous owners removed the bedroom’s closet to connect the bedroom to the mudroom. So we had nothing to lose by turning this non-bedroom into a spacious main-floor laundry room, which allowed the mudroom to just be a drop zone for shoes, backpacks, shopping bags, etc. We also removed the existing 3/4 bathroom to create our butler’s pantry, so the new powder room was moved and placed just behind the main floor laundry room.
Most spaces in our home still need curtains, rugs, and decor, but I’m honestly looking forward to selecting those at a slower pace. There are so many fun wallpapers and furniture pieces I hope to add to our home this year. It’s going to be fun to turn this place from house to home with those details, but most of all I’m looking forward to making memories with our sweet family here.
Dad says
The house turned out better than anyone could have dreamed! This worked because of great inspiration, much hard work every day, and tenacity to follow through to bring a marvelous plan alive.
Congratulations on a beautifully appointed home and a job well done.
