Basement Layout + Design Plans

After five and a half years living in our home, we are finishing our basement and we are SO EXCITED to finally be taking on this project!! We toyed with the idea of trying to sub out the project ourselves with Ryne acting as the general contractor, but with three kids and jobs, we quickly realized we don’t have time for that. So we decided to bite the bullet and hire a company that all but guarantees a six-week timeline. The crew started framing last Tuesday and they’ve already made so much progress!

Dimensioned basement floor plan with a bedroom, exercise area, media area, and bathroom

Our basement is a walkout which, let’s be honest, is only good if you intend to finish the basement. The floorplan includes a large rec space, a home gym, a spacious guest bedroom, a beautifully designed bathroom, and a few spaces set aside for storage. Having a large basement bedroom will give our guests a much nicer space to call home when they come to stay with us. Ryne is over the moon excited about having an exercise room. He has been eyeing this set-up ever since we signed our basement contract. And I for one am so excited about the kids having a place where they can play with their toys and I don’t have to clean them up before company comes over 🙃.

For the bathroom floor, we selected a matte black hexagon tile that we will pair with black grout. I love the tone on tone look and it will help hide dirt! Double win! We chose a gorgeous, handcrafted white subway tile for the shower walls. Because the tiles are made by hand, each tile is different, which will add a bit of character to our home. We’ll stack the tiles longways on top of each other for a modern look. To create some interest, we chose a basketweave marble tile for the shower floor. We chose a modern mirror with clean lines and a traditional vanity that feels like a piece of furniture and brings a lot of warmth to the space. Still up for debate are the sconces. I’m thinking these or these. We chose the Kholer Artifacts shower system in polished nickel to match the hardware on the vanity.

Construction should be complete by the first weekend of March, just in time for Spring Break 👏
