Our home office is one of my favorite rooms in the house. Between 2021 and 2022 we took this entire house down to the studs during a year-long renovation. This was originally a small dining room right off the kitchen, which didn’t make a ton of sense since it was barely larger than the existing dining nook adjacent to the kitchen. Ryne and I both work from home. So we liked the idea of turning this space into our home office- close to the kitchen for easy access to coffee (and all-day snacks!). It’s one of the only places we went with color on the walls and ceiling and I absolutely love how it makes the space feel. For those of you wondering, the walls, ceiling, and trim are Puritan Gray by Benjamin Moore at 50% while the cabinets are the same color at full strength.
During the renovation, we pulled out the 20-year-old carpet (so gross!) and replaced it with the Stuga Studio floors that we chose to run throughout the house. We shifted one doorway, narrowed the other, and added pocket doors to both openings. The locations of the thermostat and ceiling light shifted slightly, but those were relatively minor adjustments. Like all of the walls in our house, the orange-peel walls in the office got smoothed out, which made such a huge difference!
There were so many decisions to be made during the renovation, so while planning cabinet elevations we enlisted a designer to help us make the most of our storage and bring our vision to life. This was hugely helpful as we went to get bids from cabinet companies. It cost a little extra to go inset on the cabinets (where the doors and drawers sit flush with the frame as opposed to on top of the frame), but we love the timeless charm they bring to our home. Would definitely go that route again! These cabinets house all of our office supplies, the printer, chargers for devices, kid crafts, markers/colored pencils/crayons/paints/coloring books. All of the crap. Every mom knows closed storage is essential to looking like we have our lives together.
In the pic below, it’s a little easier to see the subtle color difference between the walls and the cabinets. I seriously considered going dark and moody in here but, in the end, my heart wanted to see the mono-tone dusty blue look all the way through to completion. We are so happy with how this room turned out. I am still debating if I will add window coverings to the windows, but otherwise, this room is finished.
