It was this time two years ago that Ryne and I found out we were expecting Quinn. I was 6 weeks late and had already taken four pregnancy tests that all read negative. With my second year of pharmacy school well underway I was waking up early every morning for class, which meant that when the weekend finally rolled around I couldn’t sleep past 7am.
When I opened my eyes early that Saturday morning, I decided to take one last test to put any doubt to rest. Ryne was still sprawled out in our bed sleeping soundly, so I snuck out of bed and into the bathroom. I took the test, set it on the bathroom counter, and almost immediately forgot about it because I was convinced it was going to be negative, just like the other tests. As I brushed my teeth I briefly glanced down to confirm what I already thought I knew, except this test looked different. It had TWO pink lines. With my toothbrush now dangling out of my mouth, I held the test up in the light and gave it a little shake (as it turns out, pregnancy tests are not like Polaroid pictures). I was pregnant!
I immediately wanted to jump on my husband and tell him the news! But that sweet husband of mine is no morning person. Instead, I left him a note and the positive test on the bathroom counter and ran outside into the chilly fall air to light up our fire pit… without any pants on. Dang it!
You can’t leave someone a note and then go back to the place you left the note. It defeats the purpose of the note entirely. But I also wasn’t going to explain to my neighbors why I had no pants on. So I quietly tiptoed back up to our room, grabbed my sweatpants and slipped them on just in time for Ryne to open an eye and look at me like I was a total weirdo. Thinking maybe he’d go back to sleep, I gave him a quick wave and ran back downstairs (yep, total weirdo).
When Ryne finally joined me he said, “Does that say ‘positive’?!” Followed by a huge hug, lots of smiles, and pure joy. I have never felt so absolutely overwhelmed with excitement. Pregnancy Chalkboard Idea
That afternoon, we ran the first of many baby-related errands. What to Expect When You Are Expecting, donuts prenatal vitamins, and the makings for this chalkboard all made the shopping list. Each week, we watched my bump grow next to my beloved chalkboard and I am eager to get my hands dusty again with baby number two (someday!).
We told Quinn’s grandparents, aunts, uncles, and a few of our close friends right away, but waited until I was 14 weeks along to announce our pregnancy the world. The picture below doubled as a pregnancy announcement and our Christmas card that year. And at almost 16 months old, Quinn finally fits into those little red shoes.Red Toms
